WASH-Project

in the SKILLS FACTORY on Samos

Already in the past, the SKILLS FACTORY already provided showers and laundry facilities to community volunteers. However, in 2023, as the camp population surged and hygiene facilities fell into disrepair due to water shortages, our community advocated for opening these essential services to the public, leading to the establishment and growth of the WASH project.

Today, the SKILLS FACTORY is the only place on the island of Samos where the approximately 4,000 displaced people trapped in the camp can wash their clothes.

Background
Since the inception of the closed controlled access center in 2021, the camp has grappled with challenges in maintaining an adequate water supply. Regular shutdowns and restrictions on water access, combined with a population double the intended capacity, led to the closure of laundry services, inaccessible showers, and a lack of proper hygiene. Consequently, various skin diseases, such as scabies, became widespread.

Our work in the WASH-project includes:

  • Laundry Service: Providing laundry and drying services for residents of the Samos refugee camp.

  • Shower and personal hygiene: Providing a safe space for showering and personal hygiene.

  • Offering access to hygiene products and skincare.

  • Sustainability:Utilizing hot water from a solar boiler as an economical alternative to electric heating.

OUR IMPACT

  • Improvement of health situation through enhanced hygiene standards.

  • Protection through the provision of a safe space for personal hygiene.

  • Awareness of skin diseases and access to treatment through referrals.

  • Improved well-being of residents facing the challenging living conditions in the camp.

  • Environmental protection through the utilization of solar energy and locally sourced natural laundry soap.

Department Sponsoring

In order to keep the WASH-Project running, we depend on the support of sponsors.

It is particularly important to us to purchase consumables directly on the island from our local partners, thereby supporting small, family-owned businesses.
