Kitchen Coordinator

As a Kitchen Coordinator, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our kitchen operations, including team management, menu planning, ordering, and training schemes. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the production of healthy, nutritious meals while maintaining budgetary constraints and utilizing locally available resources. This position entails working closely with a team of coordinators to ensure the smooth functioning of the SKILLS FACTORY.

About Us:

selfm.aid is a Swiss-Greek non-profit organization dedicated to addressing humanitarian crises and social issues. Operating through the SKILLS FACTORY on Samos, we provide opportunities for crafts and skills development, empowering both community and external volunteers to contribute meaningfully to improving living conditions in the refugee camp.

As kitchen coordinator you will be responsible for:

  • Lead and empower the kitchen team, including one external volunteer facilitator and community volunteers.
  • Facilitate department handovers for new facilitators, providing detailed introductions, including budgetary guidelines.
  • Organize weekly department meetings to plan cooking schedules, calculate orders, and evaluate departmental progress.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external and community volunteers regarding kitchen operations.
  • Implement and uphold project structures, policies, guidelines, and safety/hygiene protocols.
  • Oversee and maintain kitchen infrastructure, including tools and equipment, reporting any needs to the director.
  • Manage working uniforms and lockers for the kitchen team.
  • Assist the project coordinator in recruiting new external volunteers and addressing any concerns.
  • Coordinate external requests from other NGOs.
  • Conduct bookkeeping duties and provide monthly reports to the board, overseeing accounting in collaboration with the director.
  • Represent the organization to stakeholders, sponsors, and partners.
  • Assist with fundraising, outreach, social media, and advocacy efforts.
  • Prepare written reports as necessary.

Meetings:

  • Lead daily team meetings together with the other coordinators.
  • Organize weekly kitchen department meetings.
  • Participate in weekly welfare meetings.
  • Attend monthly coordination meetings.

Requirements:

  • Vocational training and/or relevant professional experience with a big passion for professions such as chef, baker, or other relevant roles in the hospitality industry.
  • Highly motivated, well-structured, and creative, with an uncomplicated, unconventional approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent team spirit: Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Open to learning from colleagues worldwide.
  • Adaptability and resilience to navigate challenging and unpredictable situations.
  • Mentally stable and capable of handling confrontational situations while maintaining healthy boundaries (minimum age 25).
  • Fluency in English is required, with proficiency in Greek, French, or Arabic desired (due to the team composition, preference will be given to local candidates).
  • Alignment with our values, philosophy, and vision.
  • Availability for a minimum of 6 months; preference will be given to candidates committed to longer-term engagement.
  • Driving license and confidence is welcomed.
